Planned processes and procedures are not evidence of R2 conformance

A common misconception among recyclers and refurbishers is that new facilities can be R2 certified from day one.  The R2 Code of Practices requires candidates for certification to have at least three months of records in order to move past the Stage 1 audit.    Furthermore, for a facility to be recommended for R2 certification, the auditor must review and document evidence that the company is operating in conformance with all 13 provisions of the R2 Standard.  A compa

SERI Year in Review: A focus on improved quality and conformance

SERI audits have been a useful tool for increasing conformance and identifying other opportunities for improvement.  Almost 70 SERI audits were conducted in the past 18 months which led to the identification and removal of 9 non-conforming recyclers from the R2 Program.  Areas of concern were identified at other facilities, 7 of which resulted in suspensions.  In most cases, however, education and recommendations from the R2 assessor helped the companies to implement better conformance strategies.

SERI Year in Review: Growing global interest in more sustainable practices for managing used electronics

It is encouraging to see the growing global interest in adopting more sustainable practices for managing used electronics.  R2 certification has expanded to 22 countries, with the most recent additions being Japan, Vietnam, and the United Arab Emirates.  Additionally, facilities in Chile, Haiti, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Yemen are also working towards R2 certification.

New modules were recently added to the R2 Implementation Guide.  The guide is meant as starting point for recyclers working on their R2 Certification.

Upcoming R2 Auditor Training in India

Because of the upsurge in R2 applications and certifications in Asia, SERI is conducting an R2 Auditor Training in Bangalore, India.  The class is scheduled for March 28-30 and is limited to 15 participants.  Cost is $400. 

So far, 16 auditors have completed the new R2 Auditor Training course, and 89 are registered for upcoming classes in Michigan, Colorado, Florida and Bangalore, India. At this time, only the Bangalore session still has space remaining.

New “Change in Status” page added to SERI website

A number of R2 certified companies (and others that use the SERI directory) have requested notification when the certification status of an R2 company changes.  This information is now available on the SERI website by clicking on the green RECENT CERTIFICATE CHANGES on the Find a Recycler page.  The Certificate Changes page will be updated twice weekly with information that is provided to us from the certifying bodies.  Please note that the R2 Recycler Directory will continue to be the most up-to-date source for verifying the certification status of a company as it is upda

R2 Round Table Lunch at ECR Conference

SERI and HiTech Assets will be hosting a Networking Lunch & R2 Certification Round Table at the Electronics Reuse Conference (ERC) in Houston.  Topic of discussion will be Reuse and the Requirements of Provision 6.  Join us for lunch (and a chance to win prizes) on Tuesday, 10/25/16 from 11:45am-1:00pm.

SERI will also be among the presenters at the Certification Course scheduled for Monday, 10/24 from 1:00pm-2:30pm, along with representatives from Source America, HRP Associates, NAID, RIOS and iFixit.
