Will the new R2v3 Standard be more detailed and prescriptive?

One of the goals of the new R2v3 Standard is to clarify requirements and intended outcomes. In areas where more explanation is needed the intent is to incorporate additional detail into the standard to reduce reliance on separate reference documents. Data destruction is one such area where R2v3 will incorporate requirements rather than rely on another source. In areas where customer demand and/or a changing regulatory environment are driving change (such as data security), requirements will be more specific about the expected outcomes.

Words Matter: Be sure you’re using the correct names, descriptions and categories

Using the proper names to identify equipment is essential to R2 conformance and legal compliance. Electronics are not commodities – processing is required to recover the various materials that will ultimately be sold as commodities. For example, it would not be accurate to classify a refrigerator as “ferrous metal” -- it is a refrigerator until the freon, plastics, and insulation are removed. Although the process of recycling a refrigerator yields ferrous metal, classifying a refrigerator as ferrous metal does not take into account the special management needed for its other hazardous compo
