What to do when you don’t agree with an auditor

SERI occasionally receives calls or emails from recyclers who are in the midst of an audit.   They are reaching out to SERI because they’re concerned about a potential non-conformance and are seeking a clarification or decision regarding the issue.   It’s important for recyclers to note that while SERI can provide clarification on R2 requirements, SERI cannot arbitrate issues between the recycler and the auditor. Recyclers should also keep in mind that not every concern expressed by the auditor during the audit rises to the level of a nonconformance.

R2 Certified Companies and DBA Name(s)

Many R2 certified companies operate under a Doing Business As (DBA) in addition to their officially registered name.  Typically, the DBA name is used when selling tested equipment on online trading sites such as eBay, Amazon, or Trade Loop, or when the certified facility has a public-facing storefront for retail sales operating at the same address.

Trust but Verify

One of the most important requirements of the R2 Standard is Provision 5e which calls for due diligence of downstream recyclers.  R2 Certification not only relies on an annual audit by the Certification Body, but also on the monitoring performed by recyclers on their own recycling chain.  Working with bad actors can seriously undermine your credibility.  A downstream vendor (DSV) may provide all the right answers on paper, and even put on a good show during an in-person visit, but their everyday operations may not always be consistent with the image they portray.  One important aspect of du

Beware of fraudulent R2 Certificates

When doing due diligence on R2 certified recycling partners, it is a good practice to ask for a copy of their R2 certificate and verify it with the SERI database of R2 certified facilities.  In the most recent incident of a fraudulent certificate, Secure Recycling LLC in Norcross, GA, presented an “R2 certificate” with altered facility name, date, and certificate number as part of their bid for a local government contract.  Fortunately, the agency verified the certificate with the SERI database and found that it wasn’t authentic.

What you must know when relocating your facility

When an R2 certified facility changes locations, the new location cannot be listed on the SERI website directory until a revised R2 certificate listing the new address has been issued.  Here are the steps certified recyclers must follow when moving their facility:
