It is encouraging to see the growing global interest in adopting more sustainable practices for managing used electronics. R2 certification has expanded to 22 countries, with the most recent additions being Japan, Vietnam, and the United Arab Emirates. Additionally, facilities in Chile, Haiti, Nigeria, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Yemen are also working towards R2 certification.
Most encouraging has been the interest in emerging markets to implement safer and more sustainable recycling practices. Several non-profits and governmental agencies have requested SERI’s help in providing training and education materials that can be used to help the informal recycling sector implement safer practices for recycling and repair. SERI is currently working on developing educational tools that will be made available to small and informal recyclers throughout the world in 2017.
