SERI / R2 Statement on Enhanced Quality Assurance Initiatives

May 11, 2016, Boulder, CO   The PBS News Hour segment "Tracking Down America's Electronic Waste" raises serious questions about the mismanagement of a portion of the electronics discarded in the United States.  It revealed that the Basel Action Network placed about 200 transponders in pieces of electronic equipment and dropped them off at recycling collection sites.  They tracked the transponders, finding that around one-third were exported, mostly to Hong Kong where some of the tracked equipment was dismantled under unsafe working conditions.  Though not mentioned in the N

New billing option for R2 companies with multiple facilities

R2 Certified recyclers with multiple facilities will soon have the option of receiving consolidated R2 license agreements and invoices.  Previously, each R2 facility required a separate license agreement and invoice.  This service will be rolling out over the next month.

When whole electronics are considered Focus Materials

The R2 requirement to track Focus Materials (FMs) includes whole electronic devices and components that contain FMs (circuit boards, batteries, mercury, CRT glass, and PCBs).  SERI has witnessed some examples of flowcharts and lists of downstream vendors that cover FMs that have been removed from equipment, but do not list and track whole electronics and components that contain FMs.

Prof. Oladele Osibanjo joins SERI Board of Directors

SERI is honored that Oladele Osibanjo of Ibaden, Nigeria has joined the SERI Board of Directors.  For many years, Professor Osibanjo has been an ardent proponent for responsible global management of used and end-of-life electronics.   In particular, he has worked to address the difficult and urgent challenges faced by developing countries, especially in Africa.
