Answering Your Questions... Regarding Data Sanitization and Validation

Q.  We use a data sanitization software to sanitize mobile phones. For the validation, we have another department that reviews the report for each wiped phone. The report indicates that the wipe has been completed and the phone has passed testing.  Does this meet the requirement for validation of the sanitization process?

Charting the course for the next generation of electronics reuse & recycling

By Corey Dehmey, SERI Exectutive Director

As SERI’s new Executive Director, I would like to thank John Lingelbach for his vision and leadership in establishing SERI and the R2 certification program. John has laid a strong foundation on which I am eager to build. I would also like to thank the many people who have called and sent messages wishing me well in my new role. SERI’s Board of Directors has established an ambitious strategic plan that I look forward to implementing.

Guidance on Imports into Hong Kong

SERI has released new guidance to assist R2 Certified recyclers and auditors to determine whether shipments into Hong Kong are legal.  Import/Export regulations can be difficult to understand. The legality of import often changes based on the type of equipment, its level of functionality, any components or characteristics deemed hazardous, the originating and destination country, and other variables.  While this guidance sets forth presumptions for compliance by R2 Certified recyclers, other conclusions could be legal depending on the variables.

Avoid certificate issues that can delay your listing on the R2 Recycler Directory

When a certifying body (CB) issues a new or revised R2 certificate, a copy is provided to SERI so that the change can be entered in the SERI database and updated on the website directory of R2 recyclers.  Inaccuracies or discrepancies on the certificate can cause a delay in updating the database and website directory.  In such cases, SERI notifies the CB so the issue can be corrected.  To ensure the accuracy and integrity of the R2 Recycler Directory, it is SERI’s policy to update the website directory only after certificate issues have been resolved.
