Responsible Recycler and Neighbor: Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council (CACRC)

After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, R2 certified CACRC helped close to 4000 non-profits, schools, agencies and individuals receive computers to help restart their lives.  CACRC is stepping up once again to help their Baton Rouge neighbors in the aftermath of August’s devastating flooding.  The Washington Post determined that the "no-name storm" dumped three times as much rain on Louisiana as Hurricane Katrina – the e

Co-Locations: How sharing space affects R2 Certification

Occasionally two or more companies may operate out of the same location.  It may be a cost sharing arrangement, sister companies operating as independent entities, or perhaps a company operating under a parent or umbrella company.  Regardless of the relationship of the co-located companies, R2 requires that all electronics recycling related activities taking place at a single facility must conform to all R2 Provisions and be included in the R2 audit.

Understanding Allowances and “Exclusions”

By Corey Dehmey, R2 Director

Periodically questions and misconceptions arise about whether certain requirements of the R2 Standard are applicable to a recycler’s business model.  Page one of the R2:2013 Standard states,

“All the provisions of this R2:2013 Standard shall be conformed to by R2:2013 electronics recyclers.  Whether conformed to directly, or through a contracted third party, the burden of proof resides with the R2:2013 electronics recycler to demonstrate conformity to each requirement.”

R2 international growth accelerates

By Henry Leineweber, SERI Operations Director

While the overwhelming majority of R2 Certified facilities are still in the U.S. there is increasing demand for the certification internationally.  New certifications were up 10% in the United States over the past 12-months, but nearly doubled outside the U.S. over the same period – up just over 80%.  Furthermore, SERI has seen increased demand for auditors and training programs in Latin America, India, and Asia over the past year.

R2:2013 and Exports

By Patty Osterberg, Director of Education & Outreach

Ensuring the legality of exports is a fundamental principle of the R2 Standard – as is promoting responsible reuse of electronics around the world, including in developing countries.  This article describes how each of these principles plays out in R2:2013, how they are interrelated, and why they make the R2 Standard the choice of so many discerning customers of electronics recyclers.

Using the FM Management Plan to create greater accountability

By Corey Dehmey, R2 Director

SERI has observed Focus Material (FM) Management Plans of many R2 Certified Recyclers that specifically name the downstream vendors in a company’s recycling chain.  While this is an acceptable method of developing the FM Management Plan as long as the additional requirements of Provision 5.a are being met, it really misses an opportunity to establish the policies of your organization and enforce those policies through the downstream recycling chain.

Clarifying the R2 License Renewal Process

One of the requirements in the R2 Code of Practices is that certified companies must have a valid R2 license in place – this includes signing the R2 License Agreement and paying the license fee. This must be completed prior to the Stage 1 audit, and every year thereafter.  Companies that do not renew their licensing agreement and pay the license fee prior to the expiration of the old agreement are subject to suspension and, ultimately the revocation of their R2 certificate.  Avoid suspension by understanding the process:
