Formal Interpretations of R2v3

From time to time, there may be need to formally clarify elements of the R2 standard by issuing Formal Interpretations.

Formal Interpretations are agreements by the R2 Consensus Body, with input from the R2 Technical Advisory Committee, that are officially approved by the SERI Board Directors in accordance with SERI’s Manual of Policies and Procedures for R2 Standard Development. Formal Interpretations carry the full authority of the R2 Standard, and are auditable and citable for nonconformance. Any other statements, written or oral, shall not be considered nor relied upon as a Formal Interpretation of the R2 Standard.

Formal Interpretations become part of the R2 Standard and, upon their Effective Date, shall be treated as such by all involved in the R2 Certification Program (e.g. R2 Facilities, Certification Bodies, auditors).

As Formal Interpretations arise and are approved, you’ll find them in the Knowledge base section for download.

R2 Guidance

Guidance is intended to offer further explanation of the requirements in the R2 Standard along with examples and audit considerations.

However, Guidance itself is not auditable and cannot be cited in relation to any nonconformance. The explanations in Guidance are intended to prevent misinterpretation of the R2 Standard, not to add to, subtract from, or modify the R2 Standard. The examples cited may not be the only way to fulfill a requirement of the R2 Standard.

R2 Guidance is periodically updated to address questions raised, new issues that arise through the R2 Certification process, challenges facing the repair and recycling industry, or to clarify the meaning or application of a requirement of the R2 Standard.
