Responsible Reuse & Recycling: It takes a village!

The saying “it takes a village” is very fitting when describing the electronics reuse-recycling industry. That’s because it takes a network of recyclers, refurbishers, and resellers to responsibly test, repair and recycle used electronics throughout the product lifecycle.  Very few, if any, facilities have the capacity to fully recycle a device on their own without relying on a network of industry specialists.

Responsible Reuse is Fundamental to R2

The R2 Standard is sometimes thought of as an “end-of-life” recycling standard.  While that is certainly an aspect of the Standard, “responsible reuse” is at the foundation of the R2 Standard.  In fact, Provision 2 of the Standard prioritizes reuse of electronics before recycling as a sustainable way of managing the growing volume of used electronics.

A New Milestone for R2

The R2 Certification Program just reached a new milestone -- more than 900 R2 Certified facilities worldwide!  The diversity of R2 Certified facilities continues to grow from ITAD, returns, and repair facilities all the way to end-of-life recycling.   R2 Certification continues to help advance SERI’s mission: to create a world where electronic products are reused and recycled in a way that promotes resource preservation; the well-being of the natural environment; and the health and safety of workers and communities.

Self-Made Claims Are Not the Same

There have been recent articles in industry publications about organizations that advertise their use of R2 Certified recyclers.  SERI certainly supports using R2 Certified recyclers, however, it is important to understand the difference between an actual R2 Certified recycler versus one that only advertises their use of R2 certified recyclers.  A facility that is not R2 Certified is not subject to R2 audits by an R2 approved certifying body and does not operate under the oversight of the R2 Certification program.  Using a facility that is not R2 Certified and monitored ma

SERI Outreach: Reverse Logistics Association – European Summit

SERI’s Executive Director, Corey Dehmey, recently spoke at the Reverse Logistics Association – European Summit in Amsterdam.  Dehmey moderated a panel discussion on the differences between used electronics vs. waste and how those differences can impact returns, warranty replacements, and trade-in channels.  Participating on the panel were representatives from four R2 Certified companies, including   Jelle Slenters (SIMS Recycling Solutions); Tom Delahunty (Wisetek Solutions); Gary Griffiths (Arrow Electronics); and Gordon Cripps (TES-AMM (Europe) Ltd).

Understanding How Complaints about R2 Facilities are Processed

Complaints can be a valuable tool and source of information in the continuous effort to improve quality and conformance of R2 Certified facilities, auditors and Certification Bodies throughout the year.  Certification Bodies (CBs) are prepared to handle complaints about their R2 Certified clients.  Because R2 Certification is based on independent, third-party audits, CBs have the direct responsibility to investigate complaints about R2 facilities and the single authority to issue nonconformities, suspensions, and revocations based on the evidence found.
