As R2 Certification continues to grow in popularity around the world, SERI is working to expand the certification infrastructure to help companies achieve R2 Certification.  Last week, SERI collaborated with the National Accreditation Board for Certification Bodies (NABCB) in India to host a virtual event for stakeholders in India.  The webinar explored the evolution of the R2 Standard, the requirements of the R2 Certification program, and the drivers that have propelled R2 to become the leading voluntary sustainability standard (VSS) for electronics reuse and recycling around the world.

Speakers highlighted how R2 has incorporated circular economy principles since it was first introduced in 2008; how reuse and data security have led the adoption of R2 Certification; and how R2 has been widely adopted for managing returns, warranty repairs, trade-ins, and IT asset disposition (ITAD).  Case studies were discussed, including how R2 Certification was adopted as a requisite for all processors operating under the provincial electronics recycling programs in Canada.

“As the demand for R2 continues to accelerate, especially in Asia, having local resources in the region will make the certification process more affordable and accessible,” says Corey Dehmey, SERI’s executive director.  The stakeholder event looked at the dynamics of adding localized infrastructure for R2 Certification in India, with broader support throughout Asia.  There are currently 33 R2 Certified facilities in India, 148 in Asia, and 963 globally.  Find more information at https://serir2.org or by contacting SERI.
